The popularity of body painting for hanging art started in the 1950’s and 60’s whereby a person’s body would be painted and then they would roll or move onto paper or canvas to transfer the paint. This produces a form of art where the image of the person’s body is produced onto the paper or canvas. A particular part of the person’s body can be concentrated on such as the chest or arms. These body painting pictures can be designed to be in multiple colours to create the desired effect. This artwork is then very personal and unique to the person who is being painted.
The other area of body painting is to cover the body in paints that will form an image that can if done well replace clothes to the extent. This is often done to show off at exhibitions or street events such as carnivals. It is a very specialised technique and a form of artwork.
The art of body painted has been around for many centuries and is linked to ancient tribal customs. There are tribes that will use natural ingredients to produce dyes that will stain the body in preparation for special events to mark their customs.
